Webinar: Privacy Breaches and the Protection of Personal Information

Presenter: Rob Samuels, Counsel, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC)

Rob Samuels is Legal Counsel with the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. His work is focused on the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and Part X of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.

Topic Summary:

Municipal government institutions must adhere to a variety of privacy-related obligations under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). Failure to follow these requirements may result in a privacy breach, which occurs when personal information is collected, used or disclosed in ways that do not comply with Ontario's privacy laws. This presentation will explore various types of privacy breaches, how to respond to a privacy breach, and best practices for keeping personal information safe, including in the work-from-home context. An overview of the IPC and our privacy complaints process will also be provided.
